Cedric Chatterly to Speak at Center for Documentary Studies

Artist Cedric Chatterley will be presenting tonight at Durham's Center for Documentary Studies.  I met Cedric last year and had a delightful time talking with him about the beautiful cameras that he makes and the images he makes with them.  Cedric makes his large format cameras in conjunction with the artists he photographs.  A very meta piece of art.

Reciprocity
Cedric Chatterley makes photographs using film and he still prints in the darkroom. A few years ago, he started making cameras. The first cameras Chatterley built were made for him alone, an exercise in the imaginative and practical use of found objects and cast-off materials. He then became inspired to collaborate with friends and fellow artists—not only in creating images but also in constructing the instruments used to make them.

There is a reception and artist's talk tonight (1/28/2010) from 6pm-9pm.  Talk is at 7:00.

Durham Art Walk is This Weekend

Durham is an awesome city full of awesome artists.  Every year the Durham Arts Council hosts a fun event called the Durham Art Walk that, like Black Friday, kicks off the holday buying season for art lovers.  I'll be out and about Saturday evening checking it all out.  See you around town!

Durham Art Walk celebrates the creative energy of our local artists, arts organizations and downtown entrepreneurs by combining downtown spaces and businesses with local artists and performers in a unique showcase weekend. Unlike conventional studio tours, the Durham Art Walk places visual and performing artists in both traditional and unexpected sites throughout downtown Durham. Sites are within easy walking distance through newly renovated streetscapes and plazas.

Started by a group of downtown artists and businesses with support from the Durham Art Guild, the Durham Art Walk remains an un-juried event powered by a zest for transformation, experiment and surprise. From the visionary legacy of historic Parrish Street, to the courage of our newest businesses and youngest artists, Durham is built on innovation. Take a little walk, take a leap of faith and find out what Durham is all about.
